Sports …… is it really a sport today!!

The very activity “sports” is such that it can bring joy to millions of people all around the world.  It is a activity which is synonymous with youth, good, health and recognition.  It is a measure of physical and mental strength!!

These days it is also connected in a big way to fame and vulgar amount of wealth.  It has reached such a stage that sport has no more remained a sport like in the good old days.  However it is very easy to cast aspirations on the way things are being done by others today.

Maybe I subscribe to the old school of thoughts that a sport has to remain a sport and not that the player ends up becoming a pawn in the hands of the few who control administration and have the money power; at the same time the player also has to live up-to the expectation of the millions of fans  who treat them like god and in the same breath dump them in case they fail to perform.  This is not a healthy sign as it gives wrong signals to the new generation.

This write-up is written by me solely with the new generation in mind.  Any kind of sport should be played with the spirit of sportsmanship.  In-fact it should imbibe this  spirit in the younger generation.  As I keep writing I am forced to reflect on the current scenario and think about the adverse effect it has on this generation.  The writing is on the wall “Win at all costs” is the motto and the others with skewed priorities go a step further and resort to fixing and the driving factor is of-course money.

Do you think the above can be called sports?  For me it is a big “No”.  I feel we can draw an analogy between sports and the life we lead.  I think this can be better justified by the up’s and downs we face in life which is analogous to win or defeat.  In both cases a man learns to accept win or defeat graciously.  I think what better platform can we provide our children to train them to face the challenges that life throws at us at every nook and corner.  It should be understood that sports highlights the importance of being physically and mentally fit.  It also helps to understand that in event of victory we have to keep our heads on our shoulders to avoid being complacent and that nothing can be taken as granted.

This is something we all should understand and highlight to our future generation so that they are seasoned to face the challenges in sports and the bigger game called life…… Lets all ensure that our future generation comes out in flying colours.

The truth……..

The topic I have taken up today is so relevant! Truth was and will remain relevant because truth is truth!!! Its is a word which summarizes it all. It is the basis of the very existence. It is the basis on which the whole world moves.

It is like the sun which gives sunshine, the air we breathe and the water we drink….. truth is the fodder and the sustaining element for our soul”.

Every thing in this world revolves around this magical word. It is such a word which represents the difference between the “good from the bad” the “beautiful from the ugly”, the “scrupulous from the unscrupulous”, the “fair from the unfair””, the corrupt from the non corrupt”, “love from lust”, the “trusted” from the “cannot be trusted”…….. this list of contradictions can be too long for me to enumerate. But what I have done here is expose only the tip of the iceberg and this brings home a fact that truth represents the good.

Then why is it that people hesitate to follow the path of the truth? This may have to do something with the path taken while following the truth which is  painstakingly long and requires one to be brave enough while facing or speaking the truth. It is easier to follow the path of least resistance in the garb of being politically right.

This is the path taken by this generation because no one has time for a conflict and some times we compromise on values for arriving at what we call a win – win situation where monetary consideration is the only criteria.  But every decision cannot be based on monetary considerations. It gives out wrong signals to the upcoming generations and also waters down contributions and sacrifices made by great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi.  He had the courage to experiment with truth and call a spade “a spade”.  Resorting to the above mentioned win-win solutions  is like constructing a building with a weak foundation which will eventually fall as they do not address the facts.

Though I am not very active on social networking sites but sometimes the status on the wall of some intelligent friends can set the ball rolling…. like it happened a few days ago. The status read as follows “There are three sides to a fact i.e my point of view, your point of view …… and the third is the actual fact. This statement really makes me wonder and arrive at a conclusion that though the perception of the fact may be subjective and the truth may be interpreted differently……however the actual fact or the truth remains unaltered or unchanged; nothing in the world can change the truth.  So how do we analyze the truth???

Since the point of views can be subjective and sometimes lead to conflict.  The intentions behind any actions will definitely play an important role while arriving at the truth…… Yes intention is key!! and this can resolve many problems while pursuing the truth especially when people differ in point of views.

I am abruptly forced to stop this write up as I have to attend work and discharge my responsibilities as these take precedence over the topic of discussion. Hope I am not compromising on values because of the impending  work and responsibility.  It is only a write up I have cut short!!!  Smile.

Food for thought……..“Love”!!

I have always wondered why the word “love” has different perceptions and triggers different thinking patterns from person to person. Actually I am not very convinced with the way I have commenced this blog.

I would have rather let me first take a broader perspective on the topic “Love”and only then I think I would be able to do justice to a topic which intrigues my mind and sets it off in an analytical mode every time I think about it. It is not that I have not written on this topic before i.e “love”.………“love”??? Please click on the following link to go to the blog written by me in the past.

I continue my write-up on the subject totally oblivious to the fact that the old man “year 2011” has just passed away and the “new year 2012” has just taken birth, I realise that I have moved a notch ahead in this century only after I hear the celebrations that has a total genre of people waiting for the clock to strike 12.00 which indicates that the new year has just arrived…. nothing really changes but there is a reason to celebrate & so be it.

As I start reflecting and trying to relate to the content I want to put forth to my readers… I would like to emphasise here that a close bond between two individuals can co-exist by virtue of blood relations, plain unconditional love, physical attraction or there can be many unconditional reasons for such a beautiful bond to exist. While there is no specific reason for such beautiful unconditional emotions to come into existence…. it must be understood that these feeling cut across many barriers and still coexist defying reasonable logic. However like it or not they do co-exist!!!

It must be understood that while these unconditional emotions fail to take cognisance of the norms set by society, they do exist……. the only fact to be noted though would be…… whether an individual acts upon such feelings……

There are two sides to this kind of situation. It brings to the fore two very important aspects about dealing with a situation like this.
  1. It is human nature to love and to be loved irrespective of given a situation, existing relations, time, place, caste and creed. This may land a person in a situation where this nature of his does not align with the constraints and limitations set by society.
  2. The other aspect is that because of the nature of this emotion called “love” which is unconditional and knows no boundaries …….. an individual must exercise restraint specially while responding to his basic nature i.e to love.
I would like to highlight here that if the above points are understood and seen in the proper perspective then a lot of relations which are strained can be saved.

Before I conclude I would like to add a note of caution that………….. this understanding of the inherent nature of “love”….. must not be used as a weapon but as a tool to improve interpersonal relations.

On this first day of the year 2012, I wish all my readers a happy love life..... with a better perspective!!!
